Fresh field evidence from Kebbi State indicates that rehabilitation work on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Transmission Line has progressed significantly, days after the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced that an Emergency Restoration System (ERS) tower had been moved to the affected location.
A photograph obtained by Signal Newsroom on Saturday, September 26, 2026, shows a transmission structure standing along the transmission corridor in Shanga, Kebbi State.
The image was captured at about 2:20 p.m. on September 26, 2026, according to the GPS Map Camera information displayed on the photograph. The location shown on the image is Shanga, Kebbi, Nigeria, with coordinates of approximately 11.154998°N, 4.654707°E.
The development is significant because it comes only a few days after TCN's latest public update on the restoration of the Kainji–Birnin Kebbi line.
What TCN said about the repair
TCN said in its September 23 update that significant progress had been recorded at the affected location following the collapse of Tower T367 along the line corridor in Yauri, Kebbi State.
According to the transmission company, the damaged tower had been completely dismantled and decommissioned, while the conductors and skywire had been properly aligned in preparation for the next stage of the restoration.
TCN also disclosed that an Emergency Restoration System tower had been moved to the site and was ready for installation.
The company said the installation would be followed by cable stringing and other associated technical works before the affected transmission line could be restored to service. (TCN News)
The development was also reported by Punch on September 24 and 25, with the newspaper noting that TCN had intensified work on the affected transmission corridor. (Punch Newspapers)
New photograph shows further progress
The latest photograph seen by Signal Newsroom provides an additional indication that work along the transmission corridor has moved beyond the stage described in TCN's September 23 statement.
The image shows a transmission structure already standing in a cultivated area, with conductors and supporting lines visible around the structure.
The GPS Map Camera information embedded in the photograph records the location as Shanga, Kebbi State, and gives the date as Saturday, September 26, 2026.
This is three days after TCN announced that its ERS tower was ready for installation.
However, the photograph should be treated as field evidence of progress rather than official confirmation that the entire transmission line has already been energised.
TCN has not, in the information currently available, announced that normal bulk electricity transmission through the Kainji–Birnin Kebbi corridor has been fully restored.
Why the repair matters
The Kainji–Birnin Kebbi line is an important high-voltage transmission corridor serving the north-western electricity network.
The problem began after the 330kV line tripped on September 7, 2026. TCN later said its linesmen discovered that Tower T367 had collapsed during a fault-finding patrol on September 8.
The company attributed its preliminary findings to heavy winds and rainstorms and subsequently declared force majeure on the affected transmission line. (TCN News)
The incident disrupted bulk electricity transmission through the corridor.
TCN said it was able to maintain transmission to Sokoto through an alternative route involving the Talata Mafara–Sokoto corridor and the 132kV Zaria–Funtua–Gusau transmission line. (TCN News)
What happens before full restoration?
Although the physical repair may be approaching its final stage, completing the structure does not necessarily mean electricity can immediately be transmitted through the line.
Technical teams still need to complete the necessary installation, conductor stringing, inspections, testing and other operational procedures before the affected section can safely be returned to service.
This distinction is important because physical completion of rehabilitation and energisation of a transmission line are separate stages.
TCN's September 23 statement specifically said that installation of the ERS towerTCN News would be followed by cable stringing and associated works towards restoration of the affected line. (TCN News)
Electricity restoration announcement still awaited
The latest field evidence will likely attract attention from electricity consumers in Kebbi and other areas affected by the disruption.
For now, however, consumers should distinguish between visible progress at the transmission site and an official announcement that the line has been energised.
TCN has previously said that its engineers and technical personnel were working to complete the restoration and return normal bulk transmission through the affected corridor. (Punch Newspapers)
If the remaining technical and safety checks are completed successfully, the next major development will be the official confirmation that the Kainji–Birnin Kebbi 330kV line has been returned to service.
Signal Newsroom will continue to monitor the situation and provide an update when TCN officially confirms the restoration of the line.
